What a proctologist treats

Conditions Dr. Tasneem treats

A proctologist diagnoses and treats conditions of the anus, rectum and lower bowel. At Swift Day Surgery the focus is minimally invasive laser care for the four most common conditions, each with its own dedicated guide.

Haemorrhoids (Piles)Anal FissureAnal FistulaPilonidal SinusRectal Prolapse
Haemorrhoids (Piles)
ELVeS® Radial® Laser

Haemorrhoids (Piles)

The most common — and most treatable — proctology complaint.

Haemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels inside or around the anus and lower rectum. They are extremely common, often caused by straining, constipation, pregnancy or prolonged sitting — and, importantly, highly treatable. Many patients live with them for years unnecessarily; most cases resolve with a swift, minimally invasive procedure.

Signs & symptoms
  • Bright-red bleeding when passing stool
  • Itching or irritation around the anus
  • Discomfort, aching or pain when sitting
  • A tender lump near the anus
  • Mucus discharge or a feeling of fullness
The Swift laser approach

We use Laser Haemorrhoidoplasty (LHP) with the ELVeS® Radial® system: a fine laser fibre is introduced through a tiny opening and gently shrinks the swollen tissue while sealing the feeding vessels. There is no scalpel and no large open wound — which means far less pain and bleeding than a conventional haemorrhoidectomy, and a much faster recovery.

Anal Fissure
Sphincter-sparing

Anal Fissure

A small tear that causes sharp pain — and heals well with the right care.

An anal fissure is a small tear in the delicate lining of the anal canal, most often caused by passing a hard or large stool. It triggers a cycle of pain and muscle spasm that can make it slow to heal on its own. Early, expert treatment breaks that cycle and provides rapid relief.

Signs & symptoms
  • Sharp, burning pain during and after bowel movements
  • Bright-red blood on the stool or tissue
  • A visible tear or a small skin tag
  • Spasm or tightness of the anal muscle
  • Discomfort that lingers for hours after passing stool
The Swift laser approach

Treatment is always sphincter-sparing to protect your continence. Depending on the fissure, we tailor a plan — from targeted medical therapy that relaxes the muscle and promotes healing, to a precise minimally invasive procedure that relieves spasm and allows the tear to close.

Anal Fistula
FiLaC® Laser Closure

Anal Fistula

A tunnel from a past infection — sealed with sphincter-preserving laser.

An anal fistula is a small tunnel that forms between the inside of the bowel and the skin near the anus, usually following an abscess or infection. Fistulas rarely heal without treatment and can flare repeatedly. The challenge is closing them while protecting the muscles that control continence — exactly where laser excels.

Signs & symptoms
  • Persistent discharge of pus or fluid
  • Recurring abscesses, swelling or a painful lump
  • Throbbing pain that eases after draining
  • Bleeding or skin irritation around the anus
  • Discomfort when sitting or moving
The Swift laser approach

We use FiLaC® (Fistula-tract Laser Closure): a fine laser fibre gently seals the fistula tract from the inside, preserving the sphincter muscle. This dramatically lowers the risk of incontinence compared with older cutting (lay-open) techniques, with a quicker, more comfortable recovery.

Pilonidal Sinus
SiLaC® Laser

Pilonidal Sinus

A tailbone cavity — cleared through a tiny incision, not a large wound.

A pilonidal sinus is a small cavity or tunnel in the skin near the top of the buttock crease, usually containing hair and debris. It commonly affects younger, active adults and is prone to painful infection. Traditional open surgery leaves a large wound needing weeks of packing — laser offers a far gentler route.

Signs & symptoms
  • Pain or swelling at the top of the buttock crease
  • Discharge of pus or blood, sometimes with an odour
  • A recurring tender lump or abscess
  • Skin irritation or a small pit/opening
  • Discomfort when sitting for long periods
The Swift laser approach

We use SiLaC® (Sinus Laser-assisted Closure): laser energy destroys the sinus tract through a tiny incision, avoiding the large open wounds and long dressing regimes of conventional surgery. The result is minimal scarring, less pain and a fast return to work and activity.

Rectal Prolapse
Tailored day-case repair

Rectal Prolapse

When the rectum slips — restored with a plan built around you.

Rectal prolapse occurs when part of the rectum loses its support and protrudes through the anus. It becomes more common with age and after childbirth, and tends to progress if left untreated. With careful assessment, it can be corrected and normal function restored.

Signs & symptoms
  • A bulge or tissue protruding from the anus
  • Difficulty controlling bowel movements (leakage)
  • Mucus discharge or bleeding
  • A feeling of incomplete emptying
  • Discomfort or a dragging sensation
The Swift laser approach

After a thorough assessment, we design a tailored, day-case surgical repair to restore the rectum’s support and function — choosing the technique that best suits your health, age and the degree of prolapse, with attentive aftercare throughout your recovery.

You are not alone

Seeing a proctologist, without the awkwardness

Most people put this appointment off. Here is what patients most often want to know before they visit.

I feel embarrassed about my symptoms.

You will not be the first, and nothing you describe will surprise the team. Consultations are private and unhurried, and any examination happens only with your consent, after everything has been explained.

Can I be seen by a female doctor?

Yes. Dr. Tasneem is a female surgeon, and many patients choose the clinic for exactly that reason. She consults in English and Arabic.

What happens at the first consultation?

A confidential conversation about your symptoms and history, followed by a gentle examination where appropriate. Dr. Tasneem then explains what she has found and talks you through the options. There is no commitment to treatment on the day.

Does seeing a specialist mean I need surgery?

Not necessarily. Many conditions are managed conservatively at first. Where a procedure may help, laser treatment is minimally invasive and performed as a day case, and your suitability is always assessed at consultation first.

FAQ

Your questions, answered

A proctologist is a surgeon who diagnoses and treats conditions of the anus, rectum and lower bowel, such as haemorrhoids (piles), anal fissure, anal fistula and pilonidal sinus. Dr. Tasneem is a General and Laparoscopic Surgeon who has specialised in proctology for over 15 years.

Yes. At Swift Day Surgery your consultation and treatment are with Dr. Tasneem Abu El Fuol, a female consultant surgeon who specialises in proctology and speaks both English and Arabic. Discretion and comfort are at the heart of how we care for you.

No referral is needed. You can book directly on WhatsApp or through the form on this page, and our team will reach out, usually the same day, to confirm your appointment.

Absolutely. Discretion is at the heart of how we work. Your consultation and treatment are entirely private, in a calm and comfortable clinic.

The cost depends on the condition and the treatment required. After a short, confidential consultation and examination, you receive a clear, fixed quote before anything goes ahead, with no obligation and no surprises.

Any bleeding, pain or lump that persists for more than a few days deserves a professional opinion. Most causes are common and very treatable, and early assessment usually makes treatment simpler.
