Understanding haemorrhoids

Haemorrhoids — commonly called piles — are swollen blood vessels inside or around the anus. They affect most adults at some point and are usually caused by straining, constipation, pregnancy or long periods of sitting. They are very common, rarely dangerous, and highly treatable.

Common signs & symptoms
Bright-red bleeding when passing stool
Itching, irritation or soreness
A tender lump around the anus
Aching or discomfort when sitting
Mucus discharge or a feeling of fullness

The four grades of haemorrhoids

I

Grade I

Small swellings inside the anal canal, not visible from outside. Often painless but may cause bleeding.

II

Grade II

Prolapse (push out) on straining but return inside on their own afterwards.

III

Grade III

Prolapse on straining and need to be gently pushed back in by hand.

IV

Grade IV

Permanently prolapsed and cannot be pushed back — often more uncomfortable.

Whatever the grade, early assessment makes treatment simpler. Laser is effective across Grades I–III and many Grade IV cases.

Types & causes

What are haemorrhoids, exactly?

Haemorrhoids are cushions of blood vessels that sit in and around the anal canal. When they become swollen or inflamed, they cause the familiar symptoms of piles. They appear in a few forms:

1

Internal

Sit inside the rectum and are usually painless — the most common sign is bright-red bleeding.

2

External

Form under the skin around the anus, where they can itch, swell and become sore.

3

Thrombosed

Occur when a clot forms inside an external haemorrhoid, causing a sudden, painful lump.

Common causes & risk factors
Straining on the toilet
Chronic constipation or diarrhoea
A low-fibre diet
Pregnancy & childbirth
Sitting for long periods
Regular heavy lifting
Being overweight
Getting older
The treatment

Laser Haemorrhoidoplasty (LHP)

ELVeS® Radial® Laser

LHP is a modern, minimally invasive alternative to conventional haemorrhoid surgery. A fine laser fibre is introduced through a tiny opening and delivers precise energy that shrinks the swollen haemorrhoidal tissue and seals the feeding blood vessels — with no scalpel and no open wound.

Laser Haemorrhoidoplasty (LHP)

No scalpel, no stitches

The haemorrhoid is treated from the inside through a tiny opening — nothing is cut away.

Local or general

A comfortable day-case procedure, usually under local anaesthetic — general anaesthesia is available if preferred.

20–40 minutes

The procedure itself takes about 20–40 minutes, and you rest briefly before heading home the same day.

Fast, gentle recovery

Minimal pain and bleeding, with most patients back to normal life within a few days.

You are not alone

We understand your concerns

Piles are one of the most common conditions we treat — and one people most often delay. There is no need to feel embarrassed, and no need to suffer in silence.

It’s embarrassing to talk about.

Our team sees this every single day. Your consultation is private, respectful and completely judgement-free.

Could it be something serious?

Haemorrhoids are rarely dangerous — but any bleeding should be checked. A quick, discreet exam rules out other causes and gives you real peace of mind.

Will the treatment hurt?

Laser treatment is performed under local anaesthetic, with no cutting and minimal discomfort during or after.

I can’t take time off for surgery.

It is a same-day, walk-in-walk-out procedure, and most patients are back to work within a few days.

Will my visit stay private?

Absolutely. A discreet clinic, confidential records and a calm, unhurried experience from start to finish.

I’d prefer a female surgeon.

You’ll be cared for by Dr. Tasneem Abu El Fuol, a female consultant surgeon who speaks both English and Arabic.

FAQ

Haemorrhoid treatment — your questions

The cost depends on the grade of your haemorrhoids and the treatment required. After a short consultation and examination, you receive a clear, fixed quote before anything goes ahead — no surprises.

Laser haemorrhoidoplasty (LHP) is performed under local anaesthetic and most patients feel little more than mild pressure. Because there is no cutting or stitching, pain afterwards is far less than with conventional surgery.

Most patients walk out the same day and return to work and daily activities within a few days, with simple aftercare guidance for a smooth, comfortable recovery.

Laser treatment has a low recurrence rate, especially when combined with simple lifestyle and diet advice to prevent straining. We guide you on how to keep them from returning.

Laser is highly effective for Grade I to Grade III haemorrhoids and many Grade IV cases. At your consultation the surgeon confirms the best approach for your specific grade.

See a specialist if you notice bleeding, a lump, persistent itching or discomfort — or any change in bowel habits. Early assessment is quick, discreet and rules out anything more serious.
